The Cottage Kit
The Cottage Kit,which is put out by the Township of Algonquin Highlands, contains everything a family renting a cottage needs in order to manage their garbage and recycling for a week. Click here to view the brochure.
Landfill Hours: You Spoke, We Listened
Starting May 1st, with the Summer Schedule, the main landfill sites in Algonquin Highlands will no longer be closed for two days in a row, they’ll be open later on Holiday Monday and Sunday evenings in the summer, and at least one landfill will be open every day.

Algonquin Highlands staff and Council received numerous complaints from concerned ratepayers about last summer’s changes to the landfill schedule. After reassessing the hours of operation and consulting with the public and various property owners associations, the Waste Management Bylaw was amended.

Without increasing the number of hours that the landfills are open each week (and thus increasing taxes), it’s impossible to accommodate everyone’s preferred schedule. However, the new schedule offers a selection of days and opening/closing times, providing several options for both full time and seasonal residents.

Holiday Monday hours will now be the same as SUNDAY hours. Holiday Monday includes: Family Day, Victoria Day, Ontario Civic Holiday (in August), Labour Day, Thanksgiving, and the following public holidays only if they fall on a Monday: New Years Day (Jan. 1), Canada Day (July 1) and Boxing Day (Dec 26). Please note: Easter Monday is not a public holiday.

Obituaries
Andy Muller & Hester Ellerington would like to announce the death of their Mother Helen Paulin on December 30, 2008 in Hamilton after a long and fruitful life. Helen had been on the lake since the 50's. Those who knew her, knew her well; those who did not, knew of her. She loved to write and Andy found this poem that we would like to share with you. She will be missed by all.

LATE AFTERNOON – OTTER LAKE by Helen Paulin, 1989
Supper ignored, I sit entranced by the sun's wild and giddy dance across the lake. Torches of light blaze up, break in a million sparks, meld with the ripples, sketch a path shimmering, shining, calling, bright. With surge of joy I answer, swim smoothly the sun-filled way, flame-warmed, light-filled, alert, reaching for more, I strike out for the further shore.

Be BEAR Aware You may not even know you are doing it. You could be attracting bears onto your property and into your community. Garbage is the main reason why bears are drawn into communities. Bird and pet food, greasy barbecues and ripe or decaying fruit, berries and vegetables are other invitations to bears to forage for food in your yard. This is not good for you, for your neighbours or for bears.

For more information on bears go to the Ministry of Natural Resources website: www.mnr.gov.on.ca (click on fish & wildlife)

Calling all birdwatchers. Here is a list of birds I have seen at the lake. I was wondering if anyone had any other different bird sightings that they could add to my list, or have any tips of places, or specific times of year to see less common birds. June Lambden. If you have any additions for the list, email June at wigleyjune@rogers.com. Click here to view the file.
